Tuesday Preview - Canadian Quilt Talk Episode # 72

Happy Tuesday everyone! Join me this week on Canadian Quilt Talk for my 72nd episode as I interview fibre artist Jaynie Himsl. We'll talk about surrounding yourself with incredible mentors and touch on the topic of deciding what you want to do and then asking for it! Jayne put her dreams out there and now she's mounting her first little solo fibre art show. As a member of the Fibre Art Network she has been encouraged, motivated and inspired by an incredible group of fine artists. She's gone from being struck by the notion that she could use her skill for sewing to create fine art when she saw her first fibre art show all the way to mounting her first solo exhibition.

Jaynie Himsl - Fibre Artist
Working with fabric has been a part of Jaynie’s life since childhood. Constructing clothes and home furnishings was her main focus for many years. When she discovered the possibility of using her sewing skills to make art, a new passion took possession of her. With guidance and practice her exploration of fibre arts has taken new directions.

Here's the list of exciting events Jaynie is involved with if you happen to be driving through Saskatchewan this summer:

  • ABSTRACTED by the Fibre Art Network (FAN) www.fibreartnetwork.com
  • ALL BEINGS CONFLUENCE compiled by Martha Cole www.allbeingsconfluence.wordpress.com
  • JOIN THE THREAD 12 x 12 fine art by SK fibre artists
  • Jaynie Himsl SOLO SHOW at the Weyburn Credit Union Gallery
  • Weyburn Art Walk - summer celebration of fibre art

If you  are a fibre artist, whether you've just recently fallen head over heels for it, or you've been immersed in it for years, the Fibre Art Network is a group you really need to check out. This is a group of Western Canada fibre artists with goals of mentorship, learning, exploring textile creativity and the exhibition of fibre art. Check out their website today.

Tuesday Preview - CQT Episode # 71 - QUILT CANADA 2015

Quilt Canada 2015 - Blown Away!

Welcome to the Tuesday Preview. Have you ever been to a CQA/ACC National Juried Show? There is so much to take in that it can just be the greatest adventure and a perfect reason to hit the road with a few friends.

My favourite part about a show this size is the incredible display of quilts and it is just so much fun to meet up with friends from all over Canada and take part in the festivities. This year I'll be taking my Part III Quilt Judge Certification test so wish me luck! I'll also be doing on the spot interviews, book signings, checking out the vendors, events, dinners and more. So this week on Episode # 71 of the CQT Podcast I'll start things off a few months early by giving you a preview of what to expect for this year's CQA/ACC 2015 National Juried Show.

Quilt Canada 2015
Lethbridge, AB
June 4 - 6, 2015

You can check out the CQA/ACC WEBSITE for everything from lodging, events and local sights to merchants, teachers and more... The local committee in Lethbridge has worked hard for a year and they have a great show in store for attendees. And if you are planning on taking the tour of Waterton Park while you are there, they say it compares to Banff, but without all the tourists!

And . . .We have a winner for this week's Quilter's Corner brought to you by Northcott Silk Inc. Samantha LeBlanc submitted an update for us on how things have been going since she won the Canadian Quilt Talk grand prize giveaway on Canada Day 2014. Congratulations Samantha! You win a gorgeous fat quarter bundle by Northcott Silk Inc.

Tuesday Preview CQT 70 - Shannon Smith

Happy Tuesday everyone! Join me this week on Canadian Quilt Talk for my 70th episode as I interview Shannon Smith. Her blog is called The Finished Garment - A Sewing, Quilting and Stitching Blog from Montreal.

Shannon is a Canadian sewing and quilting blogger living in Montreal. She’s been sewing since she was a child, but started blogging her sewing and modern quilting projects at The Finished Garment almost two years ago. In real life, she runs a web design company called Cafe Noir Designs, advocates for a more socially just web, and is the mother of four kids eight and under. I came across her BIG LISTS online which are a fabulous resource for quilters and I wanted to share them with you.

An example of one of Shannon's BIG LISTS

And the Quilter’s Corner winner today is YVETTE SITTER! And I was so excited to see her story originally come in a few months ago because I have met Yvette. She was a scribe for me last year when I judged the Regina Quilt Show. It was truly one of the best run quilt shows I have ever worked at teaching or judging. They hired plenty of judges to handle the size of show and treated us all like queens. It was so much fun!

The prize this week is a fat quarter bundle from Northcott Silk Inc. They are also sponsoring the quilt cruise. Northcott Fabrics are famous to quilters for their Stonehenge Collections. Look for OH CANADA - the latest Stonehenge collection at your local quilt shop. Designed by renowned artist Linda Ludovico, Oh Canada brings the Canadian theme into beautifully detailed textures.
